On The Road To SXSW 2012

Arriving at SXSW 2012

Listening to the Waifs, riding the Greyhound from Houston to Austin, it’s the 8th March, 2012 and I’m on the way to SXSW. Today is our wedding anniversary…. and I’m especially missing my darling Kerry and our little Iona. I love you both so much.

I’m excited to be back in the States- I couldn’t believe it’s been over 4 years since I was here, when I love so much about the country and the people here. In fact last time I was here was when I proposed to Kerry, so it’s suitably apt for today.

Road-tripping with @jeremywaite – we’ve done the 10 hours flight from this morning and we’ve talked and talked. We’re both quietly chilling back on the bus and enjoying that post ‘talked your heart out’ solo space. The last few days I’ve been interviewing folk about what makes a good road trip/ travelling buddy. Laid back, fun, up for the adventure, non stressy, interesting multi-paced conversations, a shared joy of coffee and beer, up for embracing the life around each corner with more to get excited about. @jeremywaite you rock! Let’s rip up Austin. Hooooooston Daisy.

It’s times like this- the still before the storm that I realise how incredibly rich and satisfying music is. How it reaches down and touches you in those places that get drowned out by activity, by noise, by busyness. I feel incredibly alive. I have an incredible urge to find more of life- in all it’s depth- I’m on the look out. Despite having 3 hours sleep in the last 45 hours, I feel incredibly alive and awake. Happy days…. thank you The Waifs for being honest and for sharing this moment.

I’m excited about SXSW– I’m looking forward to meeting and making new friends, reconnecting with a few old friends, and connecting in the flesh with some other people I’ve met online. This is when it gets exciting for me- when you actually meet people and breathe the same air, understand the smile and take the risk to talk. This is where I feel the most me. I’m so excited about the online connections being taken offline. The stimulating bloggers, entrepreneurs, musicians, film-makers and big dreamers- I look forward to the exciting chats that are to come from nowhere. Forget about structuring out a hit list of people to go out and find- I long for more of the campfire moments, the letting down of walls and the sharing of hearts. Sounds- a bit twee. But I’ll be letting the warmth and wildness of life lead the way.

Pause. These next few days, I’m going to pause on doing. Pause on chasing and achieving and instead I’m going to connect with those things that bring life. I’m going to enjoy good slow food, incredible thinking, great coffee and of course the joy of people- not for what they can do for you, not for how you can hustle and jostle to get into position, but for the wonder within each of us, the wonder of new thoughts, new experiences, new ideas, and new lenses we can give each other in order to see our world a little bigger. I want to give what little I have to give, but I want to learn, to love, to hear and to soar.

I love the colourful beauty that we find together. The adventure of life- the dreaming and the imagining and the celebrating of the incredible. I find contentment as I take time to let go of my ego, my need to make something happen, my driveness and I listen to what stirs my soul.

Jesus thank you. Thank you for this day. And thank you for my fellow travellers on their way to SXSW. Here’s a to a great few days…
